Appleby kicks off fair season in style Jessie Johnston Toffee apples, hay bales and a whole heap of country fair fun made last weekend one to remember. The Appleby School Country Fair has been a popular community event since the ‘90s and every year its success has grown. As the first gala on the spring calendar, the 2014 fair delivered an array of great food, competitions, entertainment and children’s activities. Board of Trustees member Rachel Knowles was delighted with the fantastic turnout the fair received and put the enjoyment of the day down, in part, to improvements that had been made to the layout and cashier system, reducing queue sizes and creating more space to move around in. The school also maintained its standing as one of the biggest fairs with an total of

The success of the school is simple; they do what they do well. “The Appleby School Fair has an ongoing reputation, not only do we have amazing support from our community and our neighbours, the generosity extends out into the wider community. People know what to expect when they get here. We have quality entertainment, food, fairground activities and the silent auction, and we don’t disappoint them,” says Rachel. The money that was raised this year will be going towards one of the school’s projects, the upgrading of its swimming pool. The pool is used by both the school and the community, and improving the facility will ensure it is there for everyone’s future use. The fair organisers wish to thank everyone who supported them on fair day.

Fizzy drinks rotting kids’ teeth

Some children in Nelson and Marlborough are drinking so much soft drink their teeth are almost completed rotted by the time they start school. The latest figures show that sugar consumption in New Zealand has reached a

new record high, with an average adult eating or drinking 54 kilograms a year. That’s the third highest rate in the western world behind the US and Mexico, and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board principal dental officer Dr Rob Beaglehole says it’s time to cut back. “I saw a six-year-old last week and he

needed eight teeth extracted and at least two fillings,” Rob says. “He was drinking one large bottle of Coke a day and so were his three siblings - the boy’s teeth were so bad he needed a general anaesthetic for the extraction.” Rob says he also extracted six baby teeth from an 18-month-old child last month

“We can confirm that we have purchased a site in Richmond but at the moment it’s very early days in the planning process. We’re happy to update you further as we move forward,” a spokesperson for Countdown says. Francis says they are retaining “a substantial part of the site” and will be building a modern funeral home on the property. Monumental masons, G Miller and Sons, which is presently located on the site, will be moving to a nearby industrial site, Francis says.

He says the teeth are “like the canary in the mine” too, because too much sugary drink leads to diabetes and obesity. “I urge all parents out there to look at the sugar intake of their family and make positive changes to the family eating pattern to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet.” Rob, who was in the Richmond Mall on Monday promoting Oral Health Week says the main source of sugar for children and teenagers is soft drinks. A display in the mall shows that one 330 millilitre can of Coke contains nine teaspoons of sugar, which is three times the daily requirement for a child. “We are saying don’t drink your sugar. Community given $10,000 in charity drive The Car Company $10,000 Charity Drive had to step outside its brief on Friday – giving more than $10,000 and splitting the money to more than just one group. The big winners were the Stoke Community Centre, which came away with $5000, and the Nelson South Swim Club, which was given $4000 cash. But the other three finalists that gathered on Friday morning to hear the final results didn’t leave empty-handed. The Food for Families Trust and the Richmond-based Pinnacle House Trust each walked away with $1000, and the Tasman Music Trust was given $500.

Car Company managing director Shane Drummond says the drive was a fantastic way to give to the community and he was blown away with the 59 entries to the competition. “There was a great cross-section and obviously plenty of need out there, so it was great to be able to help these three groups. I can honestly say three of them I’d never heard of before so it’s nice to be able to help them.” The Car Company $10,000 Charity Drive was devised to flip requests for sponsorship on its head. Shane says he would get hundreds of requests for sponsorship each year so decided to run the competition to

see which was the most worthy. Entries were whittled down to five finalists and each of the finalists spoke to the judging panel last week. The judges – Shane, Mediaworks general manager Christine Hatton, Waimea Weekly editor Andrew Board and the independent judge Tracey Black – then picked their winners. Manager of the Stoke Community Centre, Ruth Ryan, was clearly shocked when the announcement was made and says it will go a long way to helping the group. “I’m so stoked, it’s amazing. We were happy just to make the top five but to win it

was just ‘wow’.” She says the money will be used to buy a new commercial freezer. “We’re in desperate need for a freezer because we cook every day and we need space for food that we buy, so we’re delighted.” The Stoke Community Centre has 450 members and it has around 50-60 people come through its small hall each day. Ruth says many of its members had been praying for them. “We’d like to thank them for their prayers and to Shane and the Car Company for putting up the money. It’s an amazing thing to do.”

Charity bucket stolen from Mike Andrew Board

A Nelson man raising money for lifesaving surgery has had a donation bucket stolen. Mike Corkill received a phone call last Wednesday to say an empty bucket, with a photo of his family on the front, had been found outside McDonald’s on Richmond’s Queen St. Mike got on the phone to some of the businesses that have a donation bucket on their counters and it was found to have been stolen from Action Indoor Sports, not far from where the bucket

The swim school was the biggest attraction with 5991 swimmers in July, with children’s swims next at 3978. FIRE LEADS TO DEMOLITION: A commercial building damaged in fire at the Wakatu Industrial Estate in May is to be demolished. Norwest Recycled Timber is demolishing the premises that housed five businesses, including Waterblaster Solutions, Skippers Choice and Hecks Smallgoods, which have moved.

Applications are open to registered charitable trusts operating within the Nelson-Tasman region. Mail suffers circulation drop Nelson Mail has suffered a 10 per cent drop in circulation, one of the largest decreases across the country. Latest information released by ABC Circulation, for the three month period ending on June 30, shows the Australian-owned Nelson Mail has

taken a 10.67 per cent drop to its paid circulation on the same time last year, to just 11,972. The only daily newspaper in the South Island with a bigger drop was the Timaru Herald, with 14.02 per cent.

60 years of Coronation Forest A dynasty of tree-planters were special guests at the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Coronation Forest, held in the forest near the top of the Spooners. The forest was opened on June 8, 1954, when primary school children from around the Nelson-Tasman region each planted a tree to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The tree-planting became an annual event and last Friday about 70 people, including families who have been involved in the tree planting for three generations, attended the anniversary celebrations. “I planted my first tree here in 1958 when I was at Wakefield School,” Stanley Brook’s Geraldine Carleton says. “I remember it clearly because it snowed - it was freezing”. “My daughter also planted a tree here when she was at school and now it’s my grandsons’ turn. My father, Ray Mansbridge, was a woodsman at Golden Downs for five years as well, so we have a long association with the forest.” Geraldine’s daughter Karen Carleton, also of Stanley Brook, planted a tree in the forest when she was at Tapawera Area School about 30 years

Pupils from nine schools attended last week’s anniversary, and Henley teacher Amy Chippendale says visiting Coronation Forest is a good experience for the children because it gives them an insight into the forestry industry. “I came up here when I was a student at Tahuna School and my mother came up here and planted trees as well,” Amy says “It’s a good opportunity for the students to learn about forests and how they are such an im-

portant part of Nelson.” Nelson Forests Andrew Karalus says Coronation Forest was the “brainchild” of Arnold Cork, a senior agricultural advisor to the Nelson Education Board. Andrew estimates that 40,000 children have planted trees in the forest over the last 60 years, with about 350 visiting the forest this week. The anniversary also featured a presentation to long-serving forestry workers, John Ward and Don Cooper, and prizes for an school essay competition won by Mahana’s Bradley Gale. Musician Roger Lusby also performed a song he wrote for the 60th anniversary.

Buck leads Blue September run All Black legend Buck Shelford was among the 109 runners and walkers who raised more than $3000 for Blue September on Father’s Day. The five kilometre fun run was organised by MS Ford as an awareness and fundraising drive for Blue September, which is held to promote awareness around prostate cancer.

It’s the first time the Blue September fun run has been held and it took participants from the new Maitai walkway, next to the Trafalgar Centre, to Miyazu Gardens, around Founders Heritage Park and back to the start line. MS Ford dealer principal Alan Kirby says he was thrilled with the day. “We were really nervous be-

cause we were told that it’s impossible to get men along to these events. But for a firsttime event, I’m delighted with the turnout and the enthusiasm of everyone there.” Alan hinted that the fun run would be back next year and he’d like to see “double the numbers”. “We’re delighted with it, it was very cool.”

Wine industry pioneers, Agnes and Hermann Seifried, have been honoured by their peers, being inducted as Fellows of New Zealand Winegrowers 41 years after they planted their first vineyard in Upper Moutere. Herman and Agnes received the honour at the annual Bragato Conference and Wine Awards held in Blenheim on August 28. It is the first time either a couple or a female has been inducted into the fellowship which started in 1982 and Agnes says she is humbled by the honour. “After forty years of wine production, we are so very proud to be acknowledged in this way,” Agnes says. “It is humbling to be part of such an amazing group many of whom we have worked with, and respected, over the years.” Agnes and Hermann first planted grapes on two hectares of land

ness started, although the long hours didn’t count because they were enjoying themselves. Today, Agnes and Hermann’s three children also work at Seifried Estate, with Chris and Heidi involved in viticulture and winemaking and Anna taking a role in sales and marketing. All three have gained tertiary qualifications in the wine industry. “We are very much a hands-on family business and to share this achievement with our children, who are all fully involved in the winery operation, is a career highlight for myself and Hermann,” Agnes says. Although Hermann has stepped back from the winemaking and marketing, he is still busy in the vineyard. “I enjoy the whole process and it’s satisfying being involved with everything that goes into making the end result.”

Jesse nails apprentice award Jesse Walker decided he wanted to be a builder when he was only 14. Six years later the Nelson chippie completed his apprenticeship with flying colours, being named the Upper South Island Registered Master Builders Carters Apprentice of the Year. Jesse, who works for Coman Construction, received the award at a function in Blenheim last Thursday. “I was helping out my uncle when I was 14. He was doing some work on a house and that’s when I decided I wanted to be a builder,” Jesse says. “I really enjoy it. No job is the same and it’s really satisfying looking at the building at the end of the day and seeing what you have achieved.” Jesse says he did the trade building course at Nelson College and then started a building apprenticeship with Coman Construction, after leaving school in year 13 in May 2010. He completed his apprenticeship three months ago and says he plans to stay with Comans because he enjoys working on the bigger

commercial projects. “The commercial buildings are really interesting and Comans are great to work for, so I’m not going anywhere. I want to get as much experience as I can and hopefully, one day, become a site foreman and project manager.” Coman Construction contracts manager Ben Coman says Jesse has always “taken a lot of pride in his workmanship, and demonstrated initiative and a willingness to learn”. “We’ve seen Jesse develop into a skilled tradesman and a young man full of energy with huge leadership ability - we are all very proud of his achievement.” It is the second time in five years that Coman Construction has been represented in the awards, after Shayne Dickinson won the Top of the South award and finished second in the national finals in 2009. Ben says Coman Construction presently employs six apprentices. Jesse’s prizes included a choice of either a study grant to the value of $2000, or $2000 to spend at Carters.

Sixty years of service at women’s institutes The Hope Ranzau Women’s Institute has been going for 82 years and, incredibly, Richmond’s Jess Amberger has been there for 58 of those. Jess joined the Women’s Institute in Collingwood in 1953 before moving to Hope and linking with the Richmond-based group in 1956. Last Wednesday, Jess received her 60 Year Service Badge at the Hope-Ranzau group’s monthly meeting at the Senior Citizen’s Hall in Richmond. “I joined when we moved up to Pakawau because it was a good way of meet-

ing people,” Jess says. “Then we moved to Hope so I joined the Hope-Ranzau group to get to know all the people around here. “I really enjoy the social side of the group. We also do a lot of community work which I enjoy too.” Jess says the social interaction with group members has become more important for her over the last 11 years, following the loss of her husband. She has also been involved in the group’s administration, spending a number of years as president and secretary.

Young professionals have a ball Tickets are now on sale for the Nelson Young Professionals ball, the group’s premier event. The group’s fifth annual ball will be held on October 11 at the Boat House on Wakefield Quay. Committee member Wes Malcolm says the 140 tickets are now on sale for the Casino Royalethemed ball. “This is our premier event of the whole year so we’re expecting tickets to sell pretty quickly. “This year’s theme is Casino Royale, thanks to Jens Hansen, so there will be plenty of decorations -- it will be done properly. We’ve spent a lot of time and money to make the event top class.” Wes says the ball is for anyone in their 20s or 30s and you don’t have to have had any association with the group before. “It’s open to absolutely everyone, but if you’re a signed up member tickets are $49 and if you’re not, tickets are $70. That covers your alcohol and food for the night and we’ll have two great bands playing,” he says. “It will be a fantastic night.” Wes says there will also be security, and dedicated taxi zones. Poppy makers wanted for giant Anzac display A giant display of handmade poppies will adjourn the front door of Nelson Cathedral during the centenary commemorations of Anzac Day next year, and organisers want as many people as possible to be involved. The poppies can be made from wool or fabric and will be joined together to create a giant hanging display. Wanderers gear up for pig hunt Hunters are preparing to head into the backcountry around Nelson and beyond later this month in search of a prize-winning pig for the Waimea Weekly Wanderers Sports Club Pig Hunt Challenge. And there will be plenty at stake with over $5000 worth of prizes including the big one of $1000 sponsored by the Concrete Company for the average weight. There’s also $500 for the heaviest pig and good prizes for the women’s and intermediate sections as well as some top spot prizes. But one of the organisers, Bevan

Teachers make eco-friendly food wrap Two Nelson early childhood teachers, Jo Brown and Linda Hansen, are doing their bit to help the environment by developing and marketing a new eco-friendly food wrapper made of cotton and beeswax. Jo and Linda officially launched the wrapper, which they have named Happbee Wrap, at the Richmond market held at the A & P Showgrounds last Saturday. The pair has formed a small business making handcrafted, ecofriendly items and they are hoping Happbee Wrap will provide a green alternative to plastic food wraps. “We have enjoyed making things for a long time now and used to joke about starting a business to sell these things and now we have done it,” Jo says. “Linda saw the idea of a cotton food wrap and we thought it had lots of potential for it for our business. “We know quite a few schools and kindergartens already discourage plastic wraps in the children’s lunches so there was an opportunity for us to make something like

We hope our wrap will become a product that will be used by the wider community to help protect our environment.” Jo says the name Happbee Wrap is pronounced happy wrap “as opposed to Glad Wrap or Sad Wrap as some people call it”. The wrap is made from cotton fabric infused with beeswax they obtained from Jo’s son-in-law Nick Milne who is a Hope-based beekeeper. It is reusable and washable in cool soapy water.

Students get a taste of hangi

It was a celebration of Maori culture, friends and whanau as Richmond School laid down and dug up their Hangi last Friday. Students from the schools year one and two syndicates have been learning all about Maori myths and legends this term as well as some elements of traditional Maori culture including the Haka, Poi and Waiata. Their terms work culminated in a Hangi that fed the children, parents and helpers for lunch. Richmond School students with their hangi lunch at the school last Friday. The children had set aside the day before to peel, chop and package all the vegetables they wanted in their food baskets which were dug up just in time for lunch, to the relief of some hungry stomachs. There was plenty to share with friends and family but before everyone was allowed to dig in, the children put on a performance of the things they’d learnt in their Maori arts interchange and Kereama Payn performed the blessing. The school extends a huge thankyou to all the parents who donated the necessary items for the Hangi and to Kereama Payn, Carlo Goodwin and Dean Wilkinson for their hard work in the preparation of the pit.

great thing about this course is that the lessons they learn are relevant to more than just vegetables. “It doesn’t have to be someone who is planting a vege garden,” says Kirsty. “We can apply all the principles we are learning to any sort of gardening, so you can plant flower gardens, trees and shrubs, any sort of horticulture growth.” The majority of the course is theory based but the class will regularly take part in practical learning and assessments including the creation of their own compost pile and constructing an irrigation system. Course fees cover all the resources needed to complete the certificate and lessons are conducted from Broadgreen Intermediate on Wednesday evenings, making them accessible to people working during the day. “We will remember them” is a promise that the Foxhill community honoured last Sunday with their commemoration ceremony at the Rutherford Memorial Hall. The idea for the ceremony was conceived by chief organiser Helen Pullan after the Rutherford Hall received the memorial roll of honour from St Luke’s Church several years ago. Helen is involved in the Foxhill community with her husband as chairman of the hall. She is also involved with the school which was located on the same site. When the WWI memorial roll was moved from St Luke’s in 2006, Helen was involved in the dedication ceremony. However, Sunday’s service was a special way of remembering, in the context of the centennial, the ten men from Foxhill who went to WWI from 1914-18. Secretary-treasurer of the hall, Erica Short, says the ceremony was also important in remembering those who did survive and “often lived a difficult peace through mental problems or injuries.” There were 75 people who turned out to remember the men including those participating in the ceremony. Speeches were made including one by guest speaker, Lieutenant Colonel Rick Williams.

Some were involved in Gallipoli, others in battles such as Messines and some were killed by the influenza pandemic. RSA support advisor, Robin Godbaz is the only relation of his great uncle and soldier, Walter Watson, still remaining in the area. Walter holds a place on the roll and died of influenza in England. He married a month before leaving for the war and after his death his wife never remarried or had children. “I come from here and I’m a veteran too so I can relate to it in a way and I’m the only relation that’s really left of his that’s in this area, and that’s why I’m here,” says Robin. The Rutherford Memorial Hall is also home to the community’s other treasured artefacts including the roll of honour from WWII and a small harmonium that is around 140 years old from St Luke’s church that was used during the ceremony.

Big turn out for Wily Weka race The organisers of the inaugural Wily Weka rogaine held around Nelson on Saturday got it just right, with the course presenting a perfect challenge for all the teams. Two hundred and seventy competitors entered the teams’ event run by the Nelson Orienteering Club and one of the organisers, Brent Edwards, admits he was a little concerned that they hadn’t made the course challenging enough for the top competitors. But after a few 11th hour additions, the organisers designed a perfect course that had the top teams covering about 50 kilometres in six hours and almost nailing all 65 check points. The course started at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology in Nelson and ranged from the Botanics, Grampians, Tahunanui and Port Hills, to Walters Bluff. Trevor Voyce and Ash Whitehead won the men’s six-hour race with 2400 points, while Ingrid Richter, Suzie Wood and Eloise Fry teamed-up to win the women’s section with 2300 points. Jacqui Keay, Brendan Carney and Mike Sheperd won the mixed section with 2240 points. “Trev and Ash only missed three or four check points and it sounds

like it could have been all on to get them all if they had planned their route a little better,” Brent says. “We weren’t sure if we had enough check points so we did end up putting some more out at the last minute - I don’t know if it was good luck or good management, but we got it just right.” Trevor agreed, saying “it was a great event and it makes you really appreciate where you live”. In the three-hour race, Alex and Di Grigg won the mixed section with 1010 points, Malcolm Edridge, Nigel Kelly and Brad Wallace won the men’s with 1070 points and Tracey Perry and Mandy Medcalf-Stephens won the women’s section with 1110 points. Brent says the event went smoothly, although the start and finish for the two races were “mayhem”. “The start is like dropping a bag of marbles, the competitors scatter everywhere and then you don’t see them until the finish three or six hours later and then it’s mayhem again. But it went surprisingly well for a first-time event so we’ll look at running it again.” The Nelson Orienteering Club’s next event is this Sunday at Tahunanui, starting from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Open for prayer Going into Richmond on a Monday morning and passing Church on the Hill walking path, have you seen the sign? “Church open for Prayer.” Every Monday we have the Church open for you to come in and see the inside of the Church, which has been here for more than 100 years. Just imagine how many people have been praying, married, and baptised over this time. We have people from around the world pop in delighted the Church is open, as so few are during the week. It is a place for them to sit in the quiet; reflect and enjoy the peace. People walking by, sometimes after passing by several times, feel that they can come in to a place of

quiet for a chat or prayer. Everything said or spoken of is completely confidential. People passing through on the way to work come in for a chat. Sometimes to talk to someone about some problem or concern. We can chat or offer a coffee and prayer whatever is the priority. Everyone is welcome whether you attend a church or not. Film festival for student films Keep 25 September free to come to a film festival run by the Waimea College 24-7 Youth Workers. The aim is to provide a chance for Waimea College students to showcase their creative talent in film making. The Film Festival is a student led and student focused evening, although it is run by the school’s youth workers. Students host the night, present their work and it even helps them meet NCEA course criteria. 24-7 YouthWork is about the local community working together, in this case local churches and local high schools. 24-7 youth workers commit for three to five years to be present in schools as role models, listening ears and being around to help young people make good choices. Wanderers honour top performers at annual prize giving Dan Cooper was the big winner at the Wanderers Sports Club annual prize-giving on Saturday night. The club’s cricket captain walked away with the Sportsperson of the Year trophy after his exploits with the championship-winning one day and T/20 Wanderers team. The club’s top netballers and rugby players were also honoured at the prize-giving.

For the Taylor’s Contracting division one rugby team, Sam Liebezeit was awarded most improved, with Tone NgShiu walking away with the player of the year award and Steven Soper winning tackler of the year. The division two rugby team, Callum Rogers won best tackler, Gareth Palmer most dedicated, Kirby Johnston most improved and Stacey Lines won player of the year.

Coaches of the year was awarded to Aaron Everett and Todd Bavin, who coached the division two side. For the netballers, Shareena Fensom was awarded the most improved player for the B team and Linda Homan won player of the year for the B team. For the Titans, Lesa Dodsworth won most improved and Helena Omlo won player of the year.

Garin netballers win secondary school tournament Garin College A netball and Waimea College senior girls basketball teams were the star performers at secondary school sports tournaments played around the country last week. The Garin College netball team exceeded their own expectations, winning the B grade final at the South Island tournament played in Invercargill. Garin coach Sarah Rankin says the team was aiming for a top four finish and, once it achieved that goal, played superbly to beat Blue Mountain 3427 in the semifinal and then defeat Waitaki Girls 41-37 in a tense final. "We were tied 31-all at the end of the third quarter so it was really close. We went ahead about seven minutes into the final quarter and then just defended everything." Sarah says the team of Makaila Powick, Poppy Restieaux, Holly Webster, Jess Brooks, Keely Kira, Piki Boyles, Sarah Robinson, Olivia Nott, Rosette HailesPaku and Kate Hand, "played exceptionally well". Makaila and Poppy made the B grade tournament team. Waimea College also had a strong tournament losing the A grade final to St Margaret's 26-45. Waimea trailed 2-18 at the end

of the first quarter but rallied in the last three quarters. Shaun Aindow, Hannah Davenhill and Breanna Whiting made the A grade tournament team. Waimea College also qualified for next month's national secondary schools' tournament in Palmerston North. Richmond topple Jacks in semi-final

With the Saxton Stadium unavailable on Saturday due to Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament, Nelson Netball played their semi-finals on Sunday. All grades, excluding Premier 1, had 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 meeting in the semis, where there were some closely-contested games. The winners will meet in Saturday’s final. Premier 1 sees a major and minor semi format – the first and second battle it out for the direct route to the final, while the loser plays the winner of the third and fourth seed game. All four coaches were in agreement that any team, on any given day, could come away with the spoils. And that statement was no more evident than in the closeness of Sunday’s games.

While Stoke NBS had won two of their three encounters against Prices Pharmacy, they were by no means complacent going in the sudden death game. Prices had a 16-14 advantage at the first break and increased the margin to 30-27 at half time. Often, the ball the defence won was turned over before the ball could be converted. With neither team able to dominate, it was a case of sticking to the game plan and playing your own game. One could be forgiven for thinking that Richmond and Jacks were taking turns at winning – Jacks won the first and third rounds, while Richmond turned the tables in the second round and the all-important semi on Sunday. As expected, there was absolutely nothing in it as the teams could not be separated after fifteen minutes. Jacks scored on the buzzer at half time to put their noses in front by 30-29. Richmond kept their composure to score six of the last seven goals, to record the 60-56 win and book a spot in the final.
